First came to the fore as a 16-year-old in 1976, when in addition to winning AAA youth titles indoors and out, he was third in the AAA 100m. Progressed rapidly to the top of junior ranks and in a long career has won European Junior, Commonwealth and European Indoor titles. Had a unique tie with Allan Wells for the 1982 Commonwealth gold at 200m. He proved to be a most reliable third leg relay runner. Injury in 1989 ended a sequence of 12 successive seasons 1977-88 in which he ranked in the UK top five at 100m. Now a successful coach. PM
