Career summary
Solomon, who has a degree in biochemistry, worked in journalism, and is now based on the West Coast of America, where he is coached by Innocent Egbunike, the Nigerian who was the 400m silver medallist at the 1987 World Championships. At 200m Wariso reduced his best from 21.14 to 20.51 in 1994 and made a similarly dramatic breakthrough at 400m in 1998. He had run a 45.9 relay leg in an indoor international in Glasgow in 1995, but his first 400m from blocks came at the 1998 AAA Indoors, where he ran a world-leading time of 45.71 in the final. After a brilliant 3rd in the 1998 AAA 400m, he was controversially selected ahead for Roger Black for Europeans, where he was disqualified in the final (finished 6th). He disappointed in the individual 400m at the Commonwealth Games, but won silver on the England relay team.
Indoors in 1999, Solomon had best times of 20.88 for 200m (2nd at the AAAs) and 46.19 for 400m. He declined selection for the individual event, but helped the British team to national records and bronze medals at the World Indoor Championships running an anchor leg 45.84 in the heat and a 2nd leg 45.73 in the 4x400m final. Outdoors he contributed a 44.95 leg for the winning British European Cup team and reduced his year's best to 45.52 when second in the AAA 400m. However, he could run only 46.61 and was eliminated in the heats of the World Championships. He had modest form in 2000 but ran well at the AAAs with 46.14 in his 400m semi although only 6th in the final at 46.95. He came back in 2002 with a 200m best of 21.65 and ran 21.30 indoors in 2003.
